Some days you want a reply without waiting for anyone else to sit down. That’s what this page is for. Pick a strength, move a piece, and the other side answers on this device — not after a spinner that says “connecting to engine” for thirty seconds and then dies.

Easy is for rusty afternoons and first games after months away. Medium is the default mood: enough bite to punish a free piece, not so mean you resign on move twelve. Hard digs in. Master thinks longer. None of them are “tournament rated.” They’re dials on a local worker, not a cloud coach with a monthly plan.

If someone is sitting next to you, flip to Local 2-player and pass the device. Same oak board. Same rules. The difficulty knobs just go quiet until you’re alone with the machine again.

  1. Choose Vs AI, then Easy / Medium / Hard / Master — or Local 2-player if you’re sharing the screen.
  2. Pick your color if you care. AI takes the other side. You can swap before move one.
  3. Move a piece (click/drag on desktop, tap-tap on a phone). Wait a beat while the worker thinks.
  4. Blunder, use Undo if you must, Hint if you’re stuck, New game when you’ve had enough of this mess.

Gotchas

  • Hard and Master are meaner, not champions in a trench coat. Don’t quote a rating at them.
  • Closing the tab mid-game can lose the position if nothing was saved — we don’t keep a cloud vault of your half-finished fights.

Moves are checked and replies are searched in a Web Worker so the page doesn’t freeze while you stare at the oak. That matters on a tired laptop. It also means there’s no account tether and no “engine online” badge pretending a distant server is your coach.

You’ll still lose games. Local doesn’t mean soft. It means the thinking stays near the board you can see.

Common questions

Can I play against a real person online?
Not over the internet from two different devices. You can play the computer here, or switch to Local 2-player and pass one phone or laptop between turns. There’s no matchmaking lobby.
Is this a cloud engine?
The reply is searched on your device in a background worker, not on a remote “engine online” server. Easy through Master only change how hard that local search tries — harder settings think longer, they aren’t a rented titled player.
Does Undo count as cheating?
Only if you’re pretending this is a rated match. It isn’t. Undo is there so you can practice a line, take back a blunder, and keep learning without starting over every time.
Why isn’t the homepage enough?
Home is already a full game. This page exists for people who specifically want “vs computer” with the difficulty choices labeled up front — same rules and board, a bit more focus on the solo fight.
Will my games sync to another phone?
They won’t. There’s no account and no cloud save. Your position and the small win/loss tally stay in this browser; clear site data or switch devices and that local history is gone.
Can I play as Black?
You can. Choose Black before the first move and the computer takes White. You can also swap colors again when you start a new game.
